Positive Power in SharePoint

This subtle change in your thought process can help produce successful collaboration projects. I’ve experienced this directly. When a representative of a client told me recently that the collaboration site he was working on depended on a custom code workaround, I asked why he felt that way. The answer: “Because SharePoint CAN’T DO THAT.” Ultimately, approaching a

My BDC Tool Recommendation: BDC Meta Man

For serious SharePoint 2007 Business Data Catalog application work, there is really only one competitive tool available, BDC Meta Man from Lightning Tools. If you’ve attended one of my user group or SharePoint Saturday presentations on the BDC, you’ve heard the same. However, I was reminded I hadn’t published this on my blog until I received the following question from a co-worker. See more details on my recommendation in the Answer and a link to a great BDC walkthrough with

SharePoint Services Reference

Also, pay attention to the account the service uses to run.   Security All of the services run with the permissions of the Local System with the following exceptions: SPTimerV3 runs as the account you designate in the SharePoint Configuration Wizard as the Farm Account OSearch runs as the service you configure for it in Central Admin SPTimerV3,

New SharePoint Google Map Resources

At EndUserSharePoint.com, Lee Reed has shared a 4 minute video demonstrating how to add a map set at a fixed location very quickly using only your browser. Quick, easy, simple and open to even the newest SharePoint Site user.   Separately, Sandy Jacalow’s done the same example, but written out with screenshots.   I love easy examples to build off of. Whither Goest the SharePoint Gatherer?

Is the Gatherer a part of SharePoint 2007 or a relic of the the past? The SharePoint Log known as the ULS shows some errors regarding the Gatherer process. The documentation on SharePoint 2007 reveals no such beast to me. So that begs the question, what in the world is the Gatherer? And how is it related to search? The answer appears to lie in some legacy code that goes at least as far back as SharePoint Portal Server 2001.

STSADM Backup Feedback from MCM

I loved the recent Microsoft Certified Master Training I attended in Redmond last month. I learned so much and met and became friends with experts in the field. Some of the things we learned and discused don’t seem so readily findable on the wide internet. I want to surface one that is published but not easy to find.   SharePoint Backup is a often discussed topic and it would appear that it’s not well understood. Before MCM, I’d read Joel Oleson’s Backup
